American men have more of a cool reserve that certainly illustrates strong work ethnic, intelligence and interest in both world concerns and academic education, along with making time for hobbies. During courtship, a language of the eyes develops as looks, stares, and glances speak volumes of appreciation, interest, flirtation, and comfort. They have to be the smartest or manliest or sexiest or something. American men are more future oriented and value organization, hard work, and planning to reach both short and long term goals. European men are charming with their words.

While a fancy dinner would be nice once in awhile, I much prefer the casual nature of a British man. It seems when it comes to drinking, you Yanks are much more sensible. Before, after, and even during, the all-important first dates they are on the alert for false notes.

In contemporary secular terms this translates into a relentless quest for improved material and psychic well-being in a scarcely believable range of mundane domestic arenas. Not for them a swoony surrender to the mysteries of the human soul. However, they express themselves conversationally and with more tranquility. This can be true from someone who has picked up and taken off from the American Midwest or migrated from southern to central Italy. They are more emotive and expressive yet retain their masculinity.

Yet there is less interest in smoking as people choose to protect this aspect of their health. The British, apparently, suffer terrible dental hygiene and typically display the kind of prehistoric snaggle-toothed smiles that would not disgrace an Iron Age cave. This is because Sunday lunch can last for four hours followed by a walk. The absence of hang-ups and inhibitions has many different kinds of expression, with all kinds of consequence.

Then again, most British women are lushes. American men have a strong sense of degrees earned and career related pride. Apart from the suspect bowel, one of the American woman's obsessions is teeth. It is, of course, a staple of transatlantic comedy like Four Weddings and a Funeral that American women are weirdly attracted to British men. Politically speaking, the special relationship is a myth.

My wife and her friends even devised what they called a Flaw-o-matic to winnow out dud males. European men will gaze at a woman of interest until she senses it. Caroline even arranged etiquette lessons for two of the American women to show them how to correctly eat soup and how to behave at fancy dinner parties.

Yet there is

British men who date American women are, in my experience, attracted to their candour, their openness, and their directness. American men tend to be more direct, straight talking, and relaxed. Date an American and, likely as not, you will find yourself visiting a new dentist, too. However, there are some unique, funny, cultural, and outright strange differences that really impact the experience of courtship from both sides of the Atlantic. However, a glass of wine is sipped and enjoyed for its flavor and accompaniment to conversation or the meal, not for further recreation.
